The Earth’s climate is changing due to human activity and we need to reduce the emissions that enter the atmosphere. FIFA and the local organisers have been taking actions to measure, reduce and offset the emissions linked to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

What is climate change?
The Earth’s climate is changing due to human activity. The result is extreme weather events, droughts, floods and rising sea levels. What is causing this? Greenhouse gases, mostly CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels, are accumulating in the atmosphere, causing more and more heat to be trapped. We need to reduce the emissions that enter the atmosphere to minimise the impacts on climate change.

Measure the impact
The FIFA World Cup? is the biggest single-sport event in the world. While it brings significant direct and indirect social and economic benefits to the host country, its impact on the global environment is indisputable.

FIFA and the local organisers have teamed up with experts to estimate the emissions related to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The greenhouse gas accounting report shows that the event is expected to generate over 2.1 million tCO2e. With 74.7%, international travel to Russia and travel between host cities is the major contributor to these emissions.

You can measure your own carbon emissions for travelling by using an online calculator.

Reduce the impact
FIFA and the local organisers are working together for a lower-carbon 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and have taken measures to reduce the emissions under their operational control.

You too can help to reduce the impact of the 2018 FIFA World Cup by using public transport. By presenting your Fan-ID and ticket, you can use public transport services on match days free of charge to and from the stadiums within the host cities. You can also benefit from free train services when travelling from one host city to another. You can find more information on those services on www.fan-id.ru.

Offset the impact
Offsetting means cancelling the harmful emissions in one place by removing or preventing emissions in another place by funding projects that reduce emissions. This benefits the environment, but local communities can also benefit from employment, training and support for local charities.

Where emissions cannot be eliminated entirely, FIFA and the LOC will offset them through verified low-carbon projects in Russia and through United Nations-backed projects in other countries.

You too can offset your emissions by calculating your emissions and supporting verified low-carbon projects listed on the United Nations Climate Neutral Now platform.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Climate Action campaign is now closed and the winner will be announced shortly. Thank you to all the ticket holders for supporting a lower-carbon FIFA World Cup.
